Rep. Norman and Rep. Brat Announce Launch of the Congressional Waste-Cutters Caucus

WASHINGTON -- Representatives Ralph Norman (SC-05) and Dave Brat (VA-07) announced the launch of the Congressional Waste-Cutters Caucus during a joint interview streamed on Facebook live from the Capitol. Citizens Against Government Waste President Tom Schatz hosted the event.

The new caucus’s mission will be to highlight instances of wasteful federal spending and offer amendments during the appropriations process that would eliminate wasteful spending. The caucus also calls on leadership to reform the appropriations process so that members will have enough time to review spending packages and ensure taxpayer money is being spent responsibly.

“Without fiscal responsibility and discipline, our children and grandchildren will be lifting the burden that we leave for them as a result of our reckless, out-of-control spending,” said Rep. Norman. “The premise behind this caucus is to bring attention and awareness to the fact that we have an uncontrollable national debt, and that we need to act now before it’s too late. We want to use this caucus to highlight government-funded programs that are wasteful and benefit only a select few. We want to highlight and offer amendments to end wasteful programs and riders in appropriations bills. We want to find a way to get Congress back to regular order when it comes to our budget and funding our government.”

“I am grateful to Rep. Norman for leading the charge in the House to highlight and remove federal wasteful spending," said Rep. Brat. "One of the cruelest things we can do to our children is make them pay not only for their own government programs, but ours as well.”

“Taxpayers deserve to know that their hard-earned money is being spent wisely and judicially,” said CAGW President Tom Schatz.  “With America’s debt at $21.5 trillion and rising, it is time to tackle these fiscal challenges head on.  We applaud Reps. Norman and Brat for their commitment to ensuring that the federal government eliminates waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement and hope that the Waste-Cutters Caucus attracts the support of a wide array of members who share their commitment to fiscal responsibly.”

The caucus formed and launched months after Congress passed a massive omnibus spending package that increased federal spending by $400 billion. Both Reps. Norman and Brat voted NO on the bill.
