One of the most remarkable people in American history is Mary McLeod Bethune. Born in Mayesville, SC to parents who were once slaves, Mary would grow up to realize that education was one of the most powerful tools in the fight against oppression and the quest for civil rights.
Earning a mile-long academic and professional resume, she was widely known as an philanthropist, educator and advocate for both African Americans and women. Mary was also the founder of what is now Bethune-Cookman University, and a special adviser on minority affairs to President Franklin Roosevelt.
