NO DEAL OVERNIGHT:
The summit between President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended a few hours ago without an agreement.
One focus of the talks had been over a major North Korean nuclear research complex called Yongbyon. Kim Jong Un was reportedly willing to close this facility, but in exchange wanted ALL sanctions against North Korea lifted.
Sanctions are in place to apply leverage, and Yongbyon is just one of many components to Kim Jong Un's nuclear ambitions. For the United States to lift all sanctions in exchange for just that one piece of the North Korean puzzle would not have been a good deal for our nation. The President was right to walk away.
The ultimate goal is a nuclear-free North Korea at peace with the world. That does not change because an agreement was not reached this time around, and I’m optimistic we’ll get there sooner rather than later.
