Chemical Spill at Silfab Solar

Yesterday, a chemical spill involving approximately 300 gallons of potassium hydroxide occurred at the Silfab Solar facility in Fort Mill. Local emergency personnel responded quickly, and according to officials, most of the material was contained on site. Though some of the potassium hydroxide did reach a stormwater retention pond, we know that Silfab Solar contained most of this spill, and authorities indicated there is currently no threat to public safety. The situation remains under review by state and local regulators, and my office is staying in contact with local leaders as the investigation continues.

Out of an abundance of caution and in response to community concerns, I have also requested that the United States Environmental Protection Agency conduct a thorough audit of the facility to ensure all environmental and safety standards are being followed.

I want to thank the first responders and local officials who acted quickly to address the situation and protect the surrounding community.

It’s also important to address some misinformation that has circulated on this project and energy policy.

My position on energy is straightforward. I support an all-of-the-above approach that prioritizes reliability, affordability, and the freedom to let consumers choose. Folks across South Carolina who open their electric bill every month know energy costs are a real concern, in large part due to misguided “Green New Scam” policies pushed by the Biden-Harris administration. That’s why I believe we should pursue responsible energy developments across the board while ensuring companies operate safely and follow the rules.

It is also important to clarify that decisions regarding the operation or permitting of facilities like Silfab Solar fall primarily under state and local authority. As a federal representative, I do not have the authority to halt the operations of a private company, but I will continue working with the appropriate state agencies and local officials to ensure accountability and transparency.

On August 24, 2024, I held a Town Hall Meeting at Catawba Ridge High School, where concerned citizens were invited to attend to address issues related to Silfab Solar. In attendance were individuals familiar with Silfab operations, along with city and council officials, first responders, state officials, utility representatives, traffic personnel, and many others. I also invited all members of the Fort Mill School Board and Fort Mill Town Council. For three hours, I fielded questions from attendees, addressed accusations and concerns, clarified misinformation, and responded directly to any question that was raised.

As a Representative of South Carolina’s 5th District, I have a responsibility to uphold the interests of my constituents to the best of my ability. That was true when I was first elected in 2017, and it remains true today. Our community and families deserve complete transparency. My office will continue monitoring the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
