Washington, D.C. –  Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) and a bipartisan group of 33 members of Congress have signed and sent a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, asking him to consider the implications of government intervention on U.S. newspaper and commercial printing industries.

Currently, there is a paper mill of 200 employees – recently purchased by a Wall Street hedge fund – petitioning for additional government interference and intervention in an industry, that as a whole, employs over 600,000 people nationwide.

Congressman Norman has released the following statement:

"Yet again, this is another example of one company trying to leverage government intervention to gain an unfair advantage.

“If these tariffs are put into place, over 600,000 jobs in an already declining industry would be put at risk or affected. Not only does this affect jobs, but also hurts all newspapers big and small. This especially threatens to put small newspapers out of business, essentially cutting off rural and small-town America from their local news.

“Free market principles should guide import levels, not businesses asking for a handout from the government. It is my hope that Secretary Ross seriously considers the ramifications this could have on paper producers and newspapers across the country.”
