I'll be co-sponsoring a bill shortly that would ensure our troops continue to be paid should there be a temporary shutdown of non-essential services starting this weekend.
As you know, politicians have driven our nation into a financial ditch, with our annual deficit rapidly approaching $2 trillion and a national debt in excess of $33 trillion.
I'm firmly holding the line when it comes to responsible spending reductions to get our nation on a trajectory to balance the budget. However, there is stark disagreement in Washington about whether we can continue down this path of fiscal recklessness.
Unfortunately, a temporary shutdown of non-essential services is a very real possibility as we approach this weekend's deadline to pass appropriations bills. Our military won't stop working during this period, of course. Yet their paychecks could be temporarily held-up. So this bill will simply help ensure paychecks for our troops continue to arrive on time, even in the event of a partial shutdown.
