Recently, my office has received a flood of questions regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), especially after reports that a woman from South Carolina is accused of stealing $23,000 in SNAP benefits. That’s not pocket change.

SNAP is an important program, as nearly 580,000 South Carolinians depend on these benefits to provide food for their families. When it works as intended, this program helps families get back on their feet and supports children, seniors, and those who have fallen on hard times. But over the years, we’ve seen it abused by bad actors who see government assistance as a cash grab. That’s unacceptable.

In 1939, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) created the food stamp program to address widespread hunger using agricultural surpluses toward the end of the Great Depression. Congress later made the program permanent by passing the Food Stamp Act of 1964. Since then, it was renamed in 2008, but the mission has always been the same: help those who genuinely need it.

Unfortunately, fraud continues to plague this program. It is estimated that our country loses up to $20 billion to SNAP fraud each year. These stolen funds leave actual recipients with fewer benefits, and taxpayers foot the bill for this criminal abuse. That’s why we need DOGE to continue their work, so we can cut waste, fraud, and abuse, save taxpayers' money, and preserve benefits for people who need it the most.

SNAP works when it's honest. It fails when fraud goes unchecked.
