Congressman Norman Introduces Term Limits Package

Washington, D.C. –  Today, Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05) introduced a package containing three pieces of legislation on Congressional term limits. This package contains:

  • Constitutional Amendment: Gives Congress the authority to set term limits
  • The VOICE Act: Creates a nonbinding referendum on Federal election ballots in 2020 which asks “Should Congress approve a Constitutional Amendment to limit the number of terms a member of the House of Representatives and United State Senate can serve in office?” so that Congress can be made aware of where Americans stand on the issue
  • The Stop Congressional Retirees’ Accessing Perks (SCRAP) Act: Ends many lifetime benefits that retired members of Congress are given. Such as: continued exclusive access to the halls of Congress; various healthcare and retirement benefits, if eligible; and free parking a local DC-area airports

Congressman Norman has released the following statement:

"The time is now that we end the rein of career politicians and make them come home to live under the laws they pass. Term limits would cut the influence of special interest lobbyists and encourage a true citizen-legislature.

“Members of Congress are elected to serve their constituents, not reap numerous perks for the rest of their lives once they leave office. Most Americans do not have similar lifetime benefits when they leave their job. Lifetime access to this exclusive circle keeps them in that circle, and distances former members from the experiences of everyday Americans.

“We must return to a government that works for the people, not the other way around.”
