There's perhaps no sharper contrast between Republicans and Democrats than when it comes to ILLEGAL immigration.
Remember it wasn't long ago when our friends on the left were claiming "there is no crisis." while every month brought new records for the number unaccompanied children found along the border, emergency medical treatment for illegals, overcapacity at Border Patrol facilities, total number of apprehensions of illegals, on and on.
At least now we seem to be beyond the stage of denial. Even the liberal New York Times finally admitted that our nation cannot provide adequate humanitarian relief or even “basic controls on the number and nature of who is entering the United States."
Which brings us to the question of how to address this crisis. Republicans continue to push things like stronger borders, more resources for our Border Patrol, better asylum policies, and improved systems to process illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, Democrats in the House offered their “solution” last week. This was H.R. 6, beautifully titled the "Dream Act." Here are just a few gems from that legislation...
➡ It would prohibit authorities from using federal or state databases to help determine whether someone seeking access to our country was part of a gang.
➡ It would direct $34 BILLION of your tax dollars to provide amnesty to more than 2.1 million people. Things like health insurance subsidies, refundable tax credits, Medicaid, etc.
➡ Oh, but NONE of that $34 billion would be available for increased border security. Not one dime.
➡ It even allows a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants with multiple misdemeanor convictions. (Remember: some misdemeanors can be classified as violent, including assault, battery, and stalking.)
This bill was not a serious effort to address this crisis, and obviously I voted “No.” It did pass ultimately pass the Democrat-controlled House, but fortunately has no chance in the Republican-controlled Senate.
Republicans are willing to consider REASONABLE and RESPONSIBLE ideas for addressing this crisis, including what to do with so-called "Dreamers." But any legislation that fails to address border security is neither reasonable nor responsible.
