Every day, law enforcement officers across this country step into danger to keep our communities safe. In 2024 alone, 342 officers were killed in the line of duty, with 18 murdered in ambush-style attacks.

I’m proud to once again cosponsor H.R. 1551, the Protect and Serve Act, which imposes enhanced penalties for anyone who intentionally targets and harms police officers.

Under this bill:

• 10 years in prison for willfully causing bodily harm to an officer
• Up to life in prison if death results or the crime includes kidnapping or attempted murder

Backed by the Fraternal Order of Police, Major County Sheriffs of America, and others, this commonsense bill passed the House previously with bipartisan support (382-35).

Our officers deserve nothing less than our full support. It’s time to get this across the finish line.
