Reintroducing the CBO Oversight Act Amidst Barreling National Debt

With our national debt racing toward $39 TRILLION, Congress cannot make major budget decisions based on projections from an agency that rarely appears before the very committees it serves.

Today, I reintroduced the CBO Oversight Act, legislation that brings long-overdue accountability and transparency to the Congressional Budget Office.

Under this bill, the CBO Director would be required to testify before the House and Senate Budget Committees twice each year. Right now, these hearings are sporadic and far too infrequent, leaving major gaps in Congress’s ability to review the assumptions, scoring, and analysis that drive federal spending.

For years, the CBO has operated with minimal direct scrutiny from Congress. That’s unacceptable. Taxpayers deserve a system where budget estimates are transparent, Congress can routinely ask tough questions, and agencies understand they are accountable to the public.

If Washington is ever going to get serious about reining in spending, transparency at the CBO isn’t optional. It’s essential!!
