Awarding Major James Capers for his acts of valor

🚨Today is a proud day for South Carolina and for our entire nation.

The United States Senate has passed my bill, H.R. 3377, authorizing the President to award Major James Capers Jr. the Medal of Honor for his acts of valor while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

In the spring of 1967, while leading a Marine reconnaissance team near Phu Loc, Vietnam, Major Capers and his Marines came under intense enemy fire. During the firefight, he suffered devastating wounds from an exploding grenade. Despite those injuries, Major Capers refused to quit. Instead, he continued to expose himself to enemy fire to lead his men, direct their movement, and ensure that every Marine possible made it out alive.

That kind of courage is rare. That kind of leadership defines what it means to wear the uniform of the United States Marine Corps.

South Carolina is incredibly proud to call him one of our own, and our nation is grateful for his sacrifice and service. Now the legislation heads to the President’s desk so that Major Capers can finally receive the recognition he has deserved for nearly six decades.
