Today, President Trump will award the Medal of Honor to retired U.S. Marine Corps Major James Capers Jr. β our nation's highest military honor.
Years ago, I came across a photo of Major Capers as a young Marine and was immediately struck by his presence. I knew I wanted to hear his story for myself. After listening to him speak, it became clear that he was the real deal. A warrior, a leader, and an American hero!!
That's why I was proud to lead the effort in Congress to help ensure he received the recognition he earned decades ago.
A South Carolina native, Major Capers repeatedly put his men before himself during a fierce battle in Vietnam, continuing to lead despite suffering severe wounds. His courage and selflessness saved lives and embodied the very best of America.
Major Capers gave everything to protect his fellow Marines and his country. His bravery under fire is a true testament to American courage and undying resolve.
Congratulations, Major Capers. This honor is long overdue, and no one deserves it more. πΊπΈ
