Great news for faith-based child foster and adoption agencies! Last week, President Trump moved to eliminate an Obama regulation that withheld federal funding from those agencies if they worked exclusively with families of a particular faith.
Here in South Carolina, you may remember the story of Miracle Hill Ministries, which places foster children with Christian parents, in a Christian environment. Earlier this year, President Trump’s administration granted Miracle Hill an exemption from Obama’s regulation. That was a step in the right direction because without some federal funding, most foster agencies would not exist. Their ability to provide this critical service should NEVER have been jeopardized because of their religious beliefs.
Of course, newspaper headlines and liberals tried to mischaracterize that exemption. They painted it as tantamount to “denying same-sex, non-Christian foster care placements.” That was (and still is) a completely ridiculous argument, particularly given the number of other foster agencies available to serve those of different faiths (or no faith at all).
More than ever, our nation needs to protect religious freedoms. It is wrong for the government to force any faith-based organization to violate its beliefs while serving the public, ESPECIALLY in cases where suitable alternatives are readily available. A total repeal of this ill-advised Obama regulation is the right move by President Trump.
