Conversations in Congress: Ms. Janie Mines

Who among us isn't fascinated to hear the stories of our veterans?

I'd like to introduce you to Janie Mines.  Originally from Aiken, SC, Janie now calls York County home.  In fact, if you were at my town hall in York back in September, hopefully you had a chance to meet her.

Janie made history in 1980 by being the first black woman to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy.  (Just let that sink in for a minute.)  She's been doing incredible things ever since.

Following graduation, Janie served our country as a naval supply officer.  She also worked aboard the USS Emory S. Land and in the Naval Annex at the Pentagon.  Not to mention she was a senior advisor on the staff of the Secretary of the Navy.

Following her service, Janie earned an MBA from MIT and has held numerous noteworthy positions in the private sector.  Today, even though she's a highly respected management consultant, she still finds time to serve our nation as part of the U.S. Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.

To Janie Mines and all who have worn the uniform: thank you!

UPDATE 11/14/2019: Also be sure to check out this great coverage of Janie, who was the special guest at the 2019 Veterans Day Parade in York, SC:
