Meet Baby Warren

This is not something I’ve spoken about in public until recently. It’s deeply personal, and (for what felt like an eternity) we just had no idea how things would turn out.

I’m talking about my youngest grandchild, Warren, who weighed only 1 lb. 15 oz. when he was born back in September. He was three months premature.

Much of September 25th is now a blur, but I remember receiving a terrifying phone call late in the day. I remember my staff scrambling to clear the schedule and get me out of D.C. as quickly as possible. I also remember how overwhelming and emotional it was to see him in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for the first time.

It’s been said that the NICU is like a roller coaster. Every day is progress followed by setbacks, and all you can do is pray there’d be more of the former than the latter. Through it all, the strength and resilience of my daughter and son-in-law has truly been inspiring.

From Day #1 there was clear evidence of a fighting spirit within Warren. Through the heroic work of doctors and nurses, loving support from family and friends, and most importantly the grace of God, he was finally able to leave the hospital on Day #104.

Each moment we spend with him is a true miracle that I will never take for granted.
