Missing the Bigger Issue

Lots of people are missing the bigger issue here on the treatment of National Guard troops at the U.S. Capitol. This is more than a “miscommunication.” It’s a lack of Congressional leadership.

If you’re going to call in over 20,000 members of the National Guard… If you’re going to take them away from their families, their jobs, and their homes for weeks on end… If you’re going to use them to essentially militarize a huge swath of D.C…

*** Then you should not allow ANYONE to screw around with their logistics. At least not until other (appropriate) accommodations have been secured and everyone’s on board with the plan, including National Guard commanders.

That explicit directive should have been issued by Congressional leadership, which is Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in the House and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in the Senate. And it should have been issued long before the National Guard even arrived in D.C., not after lower-level employees were somehow empowered to move them to a parking garage.

I’m so grateful for all the great National Guard members who have been deployed to D.C., including many from right here in South Carolina. It’s just very upsetting to see how some of them have been accommodated.
