September Is Going To Be a Mess

On a scale of craziness from 1 to 10, the next few weeks in Congress should easily hit 15. (Maybe higher.) Here’s what’s coming down the pike:

First, the utter disaster in Afghanistan. President Biden’s botched withdrawal ignored countless critical details and numerous warning signs. Hands down, this is one of the WORST presidential failures of our lifetime. It won’t be long before much of the media begins to ignore this crisis, but I assure you it’s far from over.

Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress are working to ram through the largest tax & spend packages in decades. Yes, I agree that investments in traditional infrastructure are needed, but they’re holding that hostage in hopes of trillions of additional dollars for social, climate, and other domestic spending that we simply cannot afford. All during a time when inflation is already a major concern and our national debt is completely out of control.

Next, the federal government is only funded for just ~3 more weeks. As of now, no provision for funding has been made beyond September 30th, which is the end of the government’s fiscal year. Likely to happen is what’s known as a “continuing resolution,” where funding is extended at current levels for a certain period of time. But that’s just kicking the can down the road.

Oh, and if all that weren’t enough, your mismanaged federal government is quickly reaching the point where it cannot legally borrow any more money. So Congress will be asked to vote this month to raise the debt limit, essentially voting itself a higher credit line after maxing out our credit card. (Technically, the government’s debt limit was reached back in late July, but the Treasury has taken steps to keep the wheels moving for a short while longer.)

Do you want to know what’s NOT being considered by Democrats (and even many Republicans) this month?

Certainly not a balanced budget. Not getting our $28.7 trillion national debt under control. Not identifying wasteful spending that should be eliminated. Not spending caps. Not even offsets to pay for new programs. It’s the height of irresponsibility.

Stay tuned. September is going to be a mess in Congress.
