This picture is what the hall outside my office in D.C. looks like right now. Dead quiet. Friends, every one of you should be upset over what happened in the House of Representatives this past weekend. This was a COMPLETE and TOTAL failure of leadership.
Remember, we already passed $8.3 billion in emergency funding, and there was no an immediate deadline for this second bill. The Senate isn’t even expected to consider it until Tuesday at the earliest.
Unless you’re a Democrat lobbyist, you had no input into this legislation. There was no expert testimony, no debate, no open discussion. We don’t even know if this legislation goes far enough in some areas!
And we still have no idea what it will cost. Red flags should go up Every. Single. Time a blank check is authorized with your money, but for some reason anyone who dares question the sanity of that is demonized & vilified, and I’m tired of it!
At 12:01 AM Saturday morning, we received the final version of this 100+ page bill, and voting began at 12:35 AM. Not one person in the House had time to read or understand what this legislation does before voting.
🔥And now this…
Over the weekend, experts looked at what the House had done and realized this bill is actually a mess! There were technical errors that now must be fixed, and public outrage over the provisions that will almost certainly harm small businesses. This is EXACTLY what I warned about in my last post – see links below.
Many Republicans in the House expressed concern over this process, yet only 40 of us were willing to vote No and stick around Washington to try and make this bill what it should have been to begin with. The hall outside my office should be a lot busier right now.
Let’s hope the Senate will insist on doing what the House would not, and fix this legislation so it doesn’t devastate small businesses and those who rely on them for jobs.
